Module Five: Session Eight

Theories of Truth

Summary

St. Ignace

  • From the beginning, philosophers struggled to figure out what truth is. Socrates understood that truth is something that stands aprart from any individual or group. It is transcendent. We don't get to decide what truth is. Our job is to discover it.
  • In this module you learned that our culture is once again confused about the nature of truth. You learned about several popular, but logically impossible, theories (subjectivism, social relativism, and postmodernism). Analysis reveals that these theories are so unworkable as to be ridiculous. The crazy pictures are designed to show the topsy turvy world that would result if these theories were really taken seriously.
  • You also learned that truth is necessarily objective.
