Oversimplification occurs when someone leaves out so many
important features that it is no longer accurate. For instance,
when financial reporters say that the stock market rose or
fell because of one particular event, this is oversimplification.
That event may have played a role, but it is unlikely that
it is the only factor.

Often it is tempting to look for a quick and easy explanation
for a problem or to see an easy solution as the answer. When it
comes to major issues of the day, in almost every case, people
get the wrong answer because they oversimplify. The reason why
subjects like euthanasia, abortion, and tax rates are controversial
is that they are complex. If they were as simple as educators and
those in the media often make them out to be, then there wouldn't
be any controversy.
(i) Those who oppose abortion are just imposing their religious
beliefs on the rest of us. (Though some oppose abortion on religious
grounds, it is not a religious issue, it is a human rights issue.
Note that this like of reasoning is also a straw man.)
(ii) The solution to the education problem is to spend more money
on the schools. (The United States already spends more per student
that any other country, but still has the worst results of any
industrialized country and worse even than many developing countries.
This proves that simply spending money does not solve problems.)
(iii) Though difficult to describe in a short example, the presentation
of the theory of evolution is inevitably presented in an oversimplified
manner. For instance, many are taught that a "simple cell" is
just that - simple. There is no such thing as a "simple cell." The
simplest cell is almost incomprehensibly complex. This complexity
is a serious problem for the theory of evolution, so it is ignored.
(iv) Almost anything that appears on a bumper sticker.
By the time they outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns.
Free Tibet
Think Globally, Act Locally
Show that the issue is more complex than is being acknowledged.
